Tulum

Tulum is one of the most visited and beautiful Mayan cities in Mexico; part of its charm is that it was built facing the ocean, on a cliff from where the turquoise shades of the Caribbean Ocean can be admired in all their splendor.

This destination combines culture, history and one of the best beaches in all of Mexico. This unique destination, located at the edge of the ocean, is the most photogenic in the region and perhaps in the entire country. Every Sunday, Mexican travelers showing their ID have free access; however, if you prefer to avoid crowds, the best option is to go on a Tuesday morning.

At the southern end of the archaeological site is one of the most peaceful beaches in the Riviera. Here you will not find 500-room hotels or a large infrastructure; on the contrary, you can rent luxurious or rustic cabins, depending on your taste and your budget. Tulum is located about 43 miles to the south of Playa del Carmen. You can easily reach it by car; there also are bus lines running between the two destinations several times a day.

In the archaeological site, be sure to visit El Castillo (The Castle), the most striking building in Tulum, due to its size and location. Inside you will find the remains of some frescoes, although they are closed to the public. Visit also the Templo del Dios Descendente (Temple of the Descending God), the Templo de los Frescos (Temple of the Frescoes) and the beach, going down the cliff over the stairway.

The first event of the year is a small Carnival held several days before Lent. Later, during the month of July, the peculiar Feast of the Talking Cross is held, combining pagan and Christian elements. A more widespread event is the Festival of the Marine Turtle, which has been held since the year 2003. Communities from all over the Riviera Maya and Cancun participate in this event, which includes activities such as akite flying contest, a sand sculpture contest, beach cleaning, ecological workshops and the release of baby turtles.  .

No. 307 until you reach km 182, where you will take the detour to Boca Paila. The entrance to the park is located almost 1 mile away.
